Most software advertised as gst for software freelancers is a trial with a nicer name. This one is a plan: ₹0, no card, no expiry date, and real GST invoices — with the limits stated plainly below so you can decide before you sign up rather than after.
Why most gst for software freelancers is not actually free
There are four common versions of "free" in this market, and only one of them is what you are looking for.
- A trial. Full product, then a bill. Useful, but it is not free software.
- A demo with a login. You can enter data but not print, or print but not export. The moment it becomes useful, it stops.
- Free with your data as the price. Ads in the product, or an export that mysteriously does not work.
- A real free plan. Capped, but complete: the thing works, the output is valid, and you can leave with your data.
Billixo is the fourth. It is worth saying plainly because the first three all appear under the same search term.
How to tell an honest free plan from a trap
- Can you export everything, in full, on the free plan? This is the only question that really matters. Records you cannot take out are not records you own.
- Does it expire? A trial that calls itself a plan is the most common sleight of hand here.
- Is the document a real tax invoice — place of supply, HSN or SAC per line, the tax heads shown separately — or a watermarked sample?
- Are the limits readable? A stated volume cap and one login are honest limits. "Fair use" is not a limit, it is a reservation.
- What happens to your data if you stop using it? "Locked" and "deleted" are both answers worth knowing before you start.
- Are there ads or someone else's branding on the invoice your customer receives?
- What does the next tier cost, and is it the tier you will need within a year?
What the free plan includes
- Real GST invoices — GSTIN, HSN/SAC on every line, place of supply, the correct CGST/SGST or IGST split, and a consecutive series that restarts each financial year.
- Customers and products, with GSTIN, state, HSN and default rates stored once and reused.
- A daily and monthly invoice allowance sized for a small operation.
- One login, which suits a one-person business.
- Payments recorded against invoices, with an outstanding list.
- Full data export — CSV, Excel and JSON — on the free plan, not just the paid ones.
- Nothing to install. It runs in a browser, on a laptop or a phone.
- Fourteen days of the complete paid product on every new account, then it settles onto Free.
What the free plan does not include
- A watermark-free PDF. The free invoice carries a small mark.
- GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B export. The invoices are compliant; the return summaries are a paid feature.
- The AI features — bill scanning, HSN lookup, the assistant, written reminders.
- Extra team logins. Free is a single user.
- Bulk import from CSV or Excel. Export is free; import is not.
- Recurring invoices and payment reminders.
- WhatsApp sharing and custom invoice branding.
- These are the conveniences, not the compliance. Nothing on this list affects whether your invoice is valid.
Getting started on the free plan
- Open the free account — an email address and a password, no card.
- Enter your business name, GSTIN and state. This is what the tax logic works from, so it is worth getting right.
- Add your first customer with their GSTIN and state.
- Add a few products with HSN codes and rates.
- Raise an invoice. Check the tax split — it should already be correct.
- Send the PDF, and carry on. Nothing expires and nothing needs deciding today.
Is there free GST billing software from the government?
This comes up constantly, so: the GST portal is where returns are filed, and there have been accounting and billing offerings made available to small taxpayers through GSTN-empanelled providers over the years. What the portal itself is not is a day-to-day billing system for your counter.
The practical position for most businesses is that filing happens on the portal and billing happens somewhere else. The job of your billing software is to hand the portal — or your CA — clean, complete numbers.
That is a job a free plan can do perfectly well, which is why the free plan here produces full compliant invoices rather than a limited sample.
Free download versus free online
A lot of gst for software freelancers searches are really looking for a download: an .exe, installed once, working forever, offline.
That model has one genuine advantage — it keeps billing when the connection drops — and several costs that only show up later. The data lives on one machine, so backup is your problem and a failed hard disk is a catastrophe. Nothing bills from a second location. Updates for law changes are a manual job.
Billixo runs in a browser, so there is nothing to download, nothing to update, and no single machine holding your business. If offline billing is genuinely non-negotiable for you, that is a fair reason to choose differently — it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Credit notes, debit notes, and fixing a wrong invoice
An issued tax invoice is not something to edit. If the value was too high, or goods came back, the correction is a credit note that references the original invoice. If it was too low, a debit note. Both carry their own numbers and both appear in your return.
There is a deadline on the credit note that matters: the adjustment has to be declared by the return for the relevant month of the following financial year, or by the annual return, whichever comes first. Past that, the note exists commercially but the tax cannot be adjusted.
Software that lets you quietly retype an invoice raised last month is not doing you a favour.
Reverse charge, exports and the supplies that behave differently
Not every supply is a straightforward taxable sale. Some notified supplies put the tax liability on the recipient rather than the supplier. Exports and supplies to an SEZ can be made under a bond or LUT without payment of tax, or with tax and a refund claimed afterwards. Composition dealers cannot charge tax at all and must say so on the bill.
Each of these changes what the invoice has to say — the reverse charge marking, the LUT reference, the "composition taxable person" declaration. They are not exotic cases; most businesses hit at least one.
The fields are on the invoice in Billixo whether or not you use them, so the day you need one you are not looking for a workaround.
The AI, and what it is actually for
The useful application of AI to billing is not a chatbot. It is the twenty minutes a day spent retyping things that already exist on paper.
- Scan a supplier bill. Photograph it; the lines, the GSTIN, the tax and the totals come back as a draft you check rather than a form you fill.
- Find the HSN code. Describe the product in plain words and get a code to confirm, instead of scrolling a list of eleven thousand.
- Ask about your own numbers. "What is outstanding over sixty days?" answered from your data, not a manual.
- Write the reminder. A polite, specific chase for an overdue invoice, ready to send on WhatsApp.
Nothing is sent anywhere until you ask for it, and the platform runs on whichever model it has been configured with — including one hosted on your own server.
Where this fits in a working day
Morning: yesterday’s supplier bills get photographed and become purchase records. Through the day: invoices go out as goods do, shared on WhatsApp before the customer has left. End of the week: the receivables list says who to call. End of the month: the GST summary is a download, not a project.
None of that requires a new habit, which is the point. A billing system that needs discipline to work is one that stops working the first busy week.
The price, plainly
Free is ₹0 and stays ₹0. The paid plans are bought for a fixed term, paid once, with no auto-renewal and no card kept on file — when a term ends the account drops back to Free until you decide to buy again.
There is no per-invoice charge, no per-user surprise on the free plan, and no feature that is technically included but practically throttled. What the plan says you get is what you get.
Compare the plans on the home page, or just start free now and look at the ceiling from the inside.
Where your data lives
On the server this platform is installed on. Every record carries a company identifier and every query is scoped to the signed-in account at the framework level, so one business cannot read another’s data by any route, including a crafted one.
Sign-in is rate limited, sessions can be restricted to one device per user, and passwords are stored hashed. Exports are available on every plan, free included: if you ever want to leave, your data leaves with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the catch with the free plan?
Volume limits, one login, a watermark on the PDF, and no GST return export or AI features. That is the whole catch, stated up front. The invoices themselves are complete and legally compliant.
How many invoices can I raise for free?
The Free plan carries a daily cap and a monthly cap sized for a small operation. The exact numbers are on the pricing section of the home page, and they are visible inside the app as you use them, so you are never surprised.
What happens after the 14 days of full access?
Nothing is charged and nothing is deleted. The account settles onto the Free plan: the conveniences switch off and the volume caps apply, while every invoice, customer and product you created stays where it is.
Is it really free?
Yes. The Free plan is ₹0, needs no card and has no expiry. It has volume limits and leaves out the paid conveniences — watermark-free PDFs, GST return exports, the AI features, extra logins — but the invoices it produces are real GST invoices, and you can export your data from it whenever you like.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in a browser, on a laptop, desktop or phone, so there is nothing to install, nothing to update and nothing tied to one machine. If the office computer dies, you sign in from another one and everything is there.
See it working on your own bills
The fastest way to judge billing software is to bill with it. Photograph one supplier invoice, raise one sales invoice, and look at the PDF your customer would receive.
