A straight comparison for anyone searching gst return filing from tally erp 9. Tally is desktop software for accounting and inventory; Billixo is browser-based GST billing with a free plan. Here is where each one fits, and what a move between them involves.
The real difference between Tally and Billixo
Tally is desktop accounting software, installed on a Windows machine in the office and long established with Indian businesses and their accountants.
Billixo takes the other route: it runs in a browser, so there is nothing to install, nothing tied to one machine, and no backup routine that is your responsibility. You sign in from the counter, from home, or from a phone in the market, and it is the same account.
Neither is universally better. If billing has to keep working through an internet outage, installed desktop software has a genuine advantage that no browser-based product can match — including this one. If billing has to keep working when the office computer dies, the advantage runs the other way.
Billixo is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to any other software mentioned on this page. All product names, logos and brands are the property of their respective owners and are used here only to describe what people are comparing. Getting returns out of it
Tally is desktop accounting software, installed on a Windows machine in the office and long established with Indian businesses and their accountants.
Wherever the returns are prepared, the thing that decides how long they take was settled three weeks earlier at the invoice. GSTR-1 is assembled from your sales invoices, so the fields that were captured — or not — are what make it quick or slow.
The three that cost the most when missing: the customer's GSTIN, because a B2B supply without one silently goes into the B2C summary and the customer loses the credit; the place of supply, because it decides IGST against CGST/SGST and reports the supply in a state; and the HSN against each line, because the summary table is built from it. None of the three can be repaired at return time without going back to the invoice.
Then the two checks the department makes automatically and most people skip: whether the invoice series has a gap or a duplicate, and whether the outward supplies in GSTR-1 agree with the summary in GSTR-3B. Both take minutes to run yourself and are the most common reasons for a notice.
Filing itself happens on the government portal. Software prepares; the portal receives. Here that means GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B figures and the GSTR-2B reconciliation as reports on the paid plans, with the filing staying with you or your practitioner.
Comparing against installed desktop software
Tally is desktop accounting software, installed on a Windows machine in the office and long established with Indian businesses and their accountants.
Installed software has two real advantages and they are worth stating properly, because they are usually dismissed too quickly. It works with no internet, which at a counter with an unreliable line is not a preference but a requirement. And it is fast, because nothing is travelling over a network.
The costs arrive later and they are always the same three. The records are on one machine, so a failed disk, a theft or a reformat takes the business with it unless backups are genuinely happening and have been tested. A second person means a network setup or another licence. And getting at the figures from anywhere other than that desk is awkward, which is why month-end tends to happen in one place with one person.
The fair comparison is therefore not about features at all. It is: how reliable is your internet, and how many people need to bill? Answer those two honestly and the choice mostly makes itself.
What Billixo offers
- Browser-based. Nothing to install or update; the same account from any machine or phone.
- A genuinely free plan. ₹0, no card, no expiry — so you can test it properly before deciding anything.
- GST compliance built in. Every Rule 46 field on the invoice, HSN/SAC per line, and the CGST/SGST versus IGST split derived from place of supply rather than chosen.
- AI bill scanning. Photograph a supplier bill and it becomes a draft purchase record.
- AI HSN lookup from a plain description, for the codes nobody remembers.
- Inventory that moves as you bill, with low-stock warnings.
- Receivables and reminders — ageing, part payments, and a written chase you can send on WhatsApp.
- GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries, exported in a format a practitioner can open directly.
- Bulk import and export — CSV and Excel in; CSV, Excel and JSON out, export free on every plan.
- Fixed-term pricing with no auto-renewal. One payment, no card kept on file.
How to compare them properly, in an afternoon
- Open a free Billixo account — no card, so this costs nothing but time.
- Enter your real business details: GSTIN and registration state, not sample data.
- Add two customers, one in your state and one outside it. This is the test that separates good tax logic from a dropdown.
- Add three of your actual products with their HSN codes.
- Raise the same invoice in both systems and time it honestly.
- Compare the two PDFs side by side as your customer would see them.
- Export a GST summary from each and open both. Whichever needs less repair is the one that will save you the month.
What moving actually involves
Most of a move off a desktop ledger is data: masters (customers, suppliers, items) and opening balances. Both export to Excel or CSV, which is exactly what a bulk import expects.
In practice a migration is four things: your customer list, your product list, your outstanding balances, and a cut-off date. Historic invoices usually stay where they are — keep the old system readable for a year and start the new series cleanly from the first of a month.
Bulk import takes CSV and Excel, so if you can export a party list and an item list, most of the work is already done. The rest is an afternoon.

Cost, compared fairly
We will not quote Tally’s prices here, because they change and it is not our place to state them — check their site for what they charge today.
What we can state is ours. Billixo has a Free plan at ₹0 with no card and no expiry, and paid plans bought for a fixed term with one payment and no auto-renewal. Nothing is charged per invoice and nothing is charged per user on the free plan.
The comparison worth making is not licence against licence anyway. It is total cost: licence, plus setup time, plus time per invoice forever, plus the cost of the errors the software lets through. That last one is usually the largest and is never on a pricing page.

Reverse charge, exports and the supplies that behave differently
Not every supply is a straightforward taxable sale. Some notified supplies put the tax liability on the recipient rather than the supplier. Exports and supplies to an SEZ can be made under a bond or LUT without payment of tax, or with tax and a refund claimed afterwards. Composition dealers cannot charge tax at all and must say so on the bill.
Each of these changes what the invoice has to say — the reverse charge marking, the LUT reference, the "composition taxable person" declaration. They are not exotic cases; most businesses hit at least one.
The fields are on the invoice in Billixo whether or not you use them, so the day you need one you are not looking for a workaround.
What a GST invoice legally has to carry
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules sets out what a tax invoice must show, and it is a longer list than most invoice templates carry. Getting one field wrong does not usually cost you anything the day you raise it — it costs your customer their input credit months later, which is a harder conversation.
The fields are:
- Your name, address and GSTIN
- A consecutive invoice number, unique within the financial year
- The date of issue
- The customer's name, address and GSTIN where they are registered
- Place of supply, and the state code, for inter-state supplies
- HSN or SAC against every line
- Description, quantity, unit, rate and taxable value per line
- Rate and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess, shown separately
- Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person
Billixo fills these in from the customer and product records rather than asking you to remember them, which is the only reliable way a busy counter gets them all right every time.
Bill scanning, in practice
The single largest time cost in most small businesses is not raising invoices — it is entering purchases. A photograph of a supplier bill goes in and a structured draft comes out: supplier, GSTIN, line items, rates, tax split and total.
You check it. That is the workflow, and it is deliberate: an extraction you did not read is a liability, not a saving. But checking a filled form takes fifteen seconds and typing one takes three minutes, and that difference compounds over a month of purchases.
A note for accountants and CAs
If you are the person who has to make sense of a client’s billing at the end of the month, what you need from their software is narrow and specific: a complete outward supply summary, correct place-of-supply treatment, HSN present on every line, and an export you can open without repair.
Billixo produces GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries and exports to CSV, Excel and JSON. Client-side, the invoice fields cannot be skipped, which removes the category of problem where the data was never captured in the first place.
Free, and what it costs you instead
Free software usually costs you something that is not money: your data held hostage, an export that does not work, ads inside your invoice, or a "free" tier so narrow it is a demo with a login screen.
The line here is drawn differently. Export works on the free plan — CSV, Excel and JSON — because data you cannot get out is not data you own. The invoice is a real compliant invoice, not a sample. The limits are on volume and on the conveniences, not on whether the thing works.
Start free now. If it does not suit you, take your data with you.
Reliability, backups and getting your data out
Cloud billing software is only as good as its worst day. Two things matter more than any feature list: that your data is backed up somewhere you can reach, and that you can export it in a format something else can read.
Exports here are CSV, Excel and JSON, on every plan including the free one, covering customers, products, invoices and payments. That is the honest test of whether software respects you — not what it promises, but what it lets you take when you leave.
Frequently asked questions
What if my internet goes down?
A browser-based system needs a connection at the moment you bill — that is the honest trade-off against desktop software. If billing must continue through an outage, that is a legitimate reason to stay with an installed product.
Will my CA be able to work with it?
Yes. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries export in formats a practitioner can open and reconcile directly, which is most of what a CA actually wants from a client’s billing software.
Is Billixo affiliated with Tally?
No. Billixo is an independent product with no affiliation, endorsement or connection to Tally. All product names and brands are the property of their respective owners, and anything current about Tally should come from Tally’s own website.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in a browser, on a laptop, desktop or phone, so there is nothing to install, nothing to update and nothing tied to one machine. If the office computer dies, you sign in from another one and everything is there.
Are the invoices valid for GST?
Yes. Every invoice carries the fields Rule 46 requires — GSTIN, HSN/SAC on each line, place of supply, the correct CGST/SGST or IGST split, and a consecutive invoice series that restarts each financial year.
Start free, decide later
You do not have to choose a plan to begin. Start on Free, use it for as long as it suits you, and upgrade only when a limit actually gets in your way — never automatically, and never because a countdown ran out.
